Northfield Mountain Recreation area is owned by FirstLight Power, a company that uses water from the Connecticut River for two hydropower facilities. Part of the terms of their operation includes requirements for recreational improvements in the area, including trails for hiking and mountain biking. Right now, the terms of FirstLight’s operating requirements are being updated (from the 1960’s!) and will be in place for the next 30 – 50 years. At the beginning of this ride Connecticut River Conservancy will briefly discuss this process and how you can weigh in to get the best deal for people and the environment, then we’ll be off on to explore the trails.
