4th Annual Great Tree Bike Tour

Hosted by the Friends of Northampton Trails, the Great Tree Bike Tour is a self-guided bike tour through the neighborhoods of Northampton that can be completed anytime during the week of Sat. May 21, 2022 - Sun. May 29, 2022.

Each stop features an audio description of the story and unique nature of these 11 champion trees, accessible via QR code. A printable map of the tour (including QR codes and detailed instructions) is available here and on our website Participation is free.

    Credits & History

The 2019 Great Tree Bicycle Tour grew out of a 2018 summer project by Smith College Botanical Garden Intern Madeleine Lombard who worked with both Smith College and the City of Northampton to highlight exceptional tree specimens in downtown Northampton and integrate them into Smith's existing campus-wide "TreeSpeak" program.

TreeSpeak allows passersby to learn about a given specimen tree by scanning with their smartphone a QR label on the tree and access an audio file that teaches about that tree.

In Fall 2019, two local non-profit organizations, Tree Northampton (TN) and Friends of the Northampton Trails (FNT), teamed up to expand the “Tree Speak” in Northampton and promote extraordinary trees--as well as biking--by co-sponsoring a city-wide “Great Tree Bicycle Tour”. Many talented TN and FNT volunteers, in coordination with Smith College and the Northampton Department of Public Works, researched and recorded more audio files, and created an interactive map and signage for biking the tour. Over 150 bicyclists joined the tour which highlighted three “state champion” trees as well as trees that have deep historic importance to Northampton.

In 2020, as part of MA Bike Month, FNT revised the brochure and made it freely available online.

In conjunction with AMC Spring Festival, join us for a relaxed recreational bike ride starting in downtown Westfield, and looping south and west thru Southwick and Granville. Total riding distance is 19 miles, all on paved roads. Terrain is relatively flat but there will be a few non-trivial hills to climb. We will travel at a relaxed pace of 11-13 mph average, take periodic breaks, and ensure that the group stays together and nobody gets dropped. Rain cancels. ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED (cost is free) - use 'ticket purchase' link. We will send detailed ride information, including where to rendezvous, to everyone who registers.

You must have a bicycle in good working order that is suitable for riding on paved roads, wear a properly-fitting bicycle helmet at all times while riding, carry an adequate supply of water, and have a spare tube that fits your tires. Plan and prepare to be out for approximately two hours.

Please review all our group riding policies which are posted online here:

After the ride, we encourage all participants to transfer to AMC's Noble View Outdoor Center for lunch and afternoon exhibits offered by volunteer trip leaders from AMC's Western MA chapter. Plus, explore the Noble View grounds and learn more about the many all-season activities you can enjoy at this beautiful outdoor recreation and lodging facility!

Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival

After a few years hiatus, local mobile bicycle shop Speed and Sprocket Cycle Works is bringing the Ciclismo Classico Bike Travel Film Festival back to the Pioneer Valley! For those who've never attended, get ready for an entire evening of cycling inspiration that will make you want to quit your job (as if you need an excuse) and hit the open road. This year, the festival is moving from March to May, to coincide with Bay State Bike Month and to get you ready for the cycling season! We are also moving the venue to the amazing and newly opened Bombyx Center for Arts and Equity!

In addition to in-person, we'll be offering streaming tickets to allow you to watch from the comfort of your own couch this year!

For those who choose to attend in person, come early for our VIP tasting event, where we’ll have a selection of fine foods and beverages to pair with from Provisions in Northampton. In previous years, lots of attendees were disappointed that they didn't splurge when they saw the spread that was available - don't be one of those people this year!

Every attendee gets a free raffle ticket (additional tickets available for purchase!) for our amazing giveaway of goodies, with all proceeds from the evening going to MassBike and World Bicycle Relief.

This event is made possible thanks to the River Valley Co-op, Provisions, Pedal 2 Pints, The Murphys Realtors, Inc., and the Sugar Maple Trailside Inn.

We will be following current guidelines regarding masking, but all attendees are encouraged to mask for their own comfort.

For more information and updates on this year’s films, please visit

    - - -

The in-person festival will be held at the newly opened Bombyx Center for Arts and Equity in Florence, and concurrently viewers can watch it from home via an online stream, making it accessible to adventure-lovers anywhere in the world. It is the only English-language festival devoted solely to travel by bicycle, but you don't have to be a cyclist to enjoy these tales of explorers aged 17 to 77 enjoying the world and the outdoors.

Before the evening’s main event, there will be a VIP tasting and social hour sponsored by Provisions in Northampton, where attendees will get to taste a smorgasbord of fine food and drink while mingling with like minded new friends!
